Stone Look Tile

Stone look tile is porcelain made to look like limestone, slate, bluestone, travertine or basalt. You get the colour shifts and texture of stone without the sealing and the soft spots that come with real stone. It's a good fit for kitchens, bathrooms, entries, basements and patios, anywhere you want a natural look on a floor that has to take daily use.

Stone Look Porcelain vs Natural Stone

If you are looking for real stone flooring, see our natural stone tile.

Pick the look

• Limestone look: soft beige, cream and grey with little movement. Calm and easy to live with in large rooms.
• Slate look: darker, layered surface with texture underfoot. Hides dirt well in entries and mudrooms.
• Bluestone look: cool blue-grey, common on patios and pool decks.
• Travertine look: warm beige with the look of filled holes, without real holes to clean.
• Basalt and quartzite look: dense, even greys for a modern look.

What to check before you buy

• Slip rating. For showers, wet entries and outdoor areas, look for a textured or anti-slip finish (DCOF 0.42+ wet, or R11 outdoors). Polished stone-look tile is slippery when wet. See anti-slip floor tiles and our R11 and R12 guide.
• Number of faces. A series with more face designs repeats less. Lay out a few boxes before you install so similar tiles don't end up side by side.
• Size and floor flatness. Large tiles like 24x48 need a very flat floor or the edges stand proud (lippage). See 24x48 tile.
• Indoor or outdoor. For patios and pool decks, use 2cm porcelain pavers or tile rated for exterior use. See outdoor tiles.
• Shade variation. Order everything from one lot, with a little extra for cuts and future repairs.
• Order a sample. Stone looks change a lot between photo and real light. Use "Get Sample" on any product page.

What Customer Usally Asks

Q) Is stone look tile cheaper than real stone?

A) Usually, yes, and installation is simpler because there's no sealing. Compare prices per square foot on the product pages.

Q) Can stone look tile go outside?

A) Only if the product is rated for exterior use and has an outdoor slip rating. 2cm pavers are the safest choice for patios.

Q) Does stone look tile need sealing?

A) The porcelain doesn't. Cement grout may, so check the grout you plan to use.
